The following is a letter from the President of Ireland to my great aunt
upon learning of the death of her husband, David:
28th May, 1963
Dear Mrs. O'Brien,
It is with very deep regret indeed that I learned from you letter that
your good husband, David, is gone from us. I bhFaithleas De go raibh
a anam.
He was one of the great brave soldiers who fought for the Republic and
were willing to give their lives for it. May Ireland always have men such
as he to defend her.
I do hope that such progress as it has been possible to make here gave
your husband some consolation in his exile.
I offer you my most sincere sympathy in your sorrow.
Sincerely yours,
